Final Year Project

Project Title

Restructuring the Question of Sovereign Debt and Debt Sustainability: Past, Present, and Future

Description

Due to the global economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, conditions took a turn for the worse as a significant gap developed between supply and demand, leading to price increases. Pakistan's economic decision-makers made efforts to contain the damage, but as the political situation worsened in late March, priorities shifted, and Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves declined rapidly. Recognizing the problem, the new government promptly initiated negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). However, political considerations also influenced these negotiations, and the recent bout of political instability has raised concerns about Pakistan's financial health among some analysts. This paper explores ways in which Pakistan can develop better institutions for the monitoring and management of external debt, as it has become an existential problem for many economies, particularly since the pandemic.
